Medium Bosses are stronger enemies that can appear once or several times per mission, and usually have powerful attacks and health closer to a normal Boss than a normal enemy. Unlike bosses, however, they lack phases and dedicated boss healthbars, and are with few exceptions never used to close off a mission.

Finishing them off with a Skill will grant a bonus of 200 Kudos in the first Azure Striker Gunvolt game, while in all other games it will grant a bonus of 500 Kudos. Some medium bosses also have Secret Kudos bonuses attached to them in the first game.

Azure Striker Gunvolt[]

Mantis[]

Mantis illustration
Mantis ova

The Michi Mark 17 Type-C "Mantis" (ミチ一七式丙“マンティス”) is a 9th generation unmanned tank created by the Sumeragi Futures Institute of Technology (S-FIT)'s 8th department to face violent adepts, being a model intended for nocturnal warfare. While the cooling device of the power core is a bit unstable, the easiness of using it and its high firepower make it a common tank within the Sumeragi Group.[1]

Appearing in 1st Sumeragi, it serves as the intro boss of Azure Striker Gunvolt. After Gunvolt manages to get onto the train holding Joule, three units are sent on the railway to stop him. Two of them are destroyed by Asimov, but one reaches the train and jumps onto the car before GV. This fight comes with a crate for a foothold. Towards the end of the train, another Mantis (which was presumably already on the train guarding Joule's car) begins firing lasers at GV from off-screen, and in the battle against it there is no foothold.

The "Michi" in its designation stands for its status as an S-FIT 8th department creation. "Mi" comes from 未来 Mirai (Future), while "chi" is the 8th character in Iroha.[2]

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Mantis
Homing Missiles
Fires a swarm of missiles at Gunvolt. They can be blocked by the Flashfield.
Mantis - Vulcans
Vulcans
The Mantis sweeps the ground with a hail of bullets. Avoid by jumping in the air or simply staying off the ground in general.
Mantis - Laser Cannon
Hi-Output Radiant Light Amplification Gun
高出力輻射式増幅光砲
Only the second Mantis uses this attack. A large beam is fired straight forward. Don't jump while it is firing.

Spyder[]

Spyder illustration

The Miha Mk X19 "Spyder" (ミハX一九式“スパイダー”) is a prototype 10th generation unmanned tank. It is being developed in parallel with the Plasma Legion, but with a different approach and staff team, and unlike the Plasma Legion has reached the field testing stage of development. While it's got high performance, it also has maintenance and cost performance issues, making many question whether it's worth really being called a 10th gen.[1]

QUILL had no knowledge of it prior to Gunvolt's encounter. In addition to its armaments and ability to cling to ceilings, this robot has a hard shell protecting its core unit which only opens up when it attacks.

It first appears in Biochem Plant as the mid-boss of the stage. As it was still only being tested, a lower ranked soldier protested to deploying it, but was overruled by his superior officer who insisted that blowing away Gunvolt would be a fine demonstration. It was however destroyed by Gunvolt.

It's later mentioned in a base conversation in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 that the Spyder unit was nixed before entering production phase.

Given the meaning of the Mantis' "Michi" designation, as a "Miha" machine the Spyder is most likely a creation of S-FIT's 3rd department. ("ha" is the 3rd character in Iroha)

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Spyder - Laser Ceiling
Laser Cannon
Anti-air pattern
Fires a blast diagonally upwards to clip the upper layer and air, causing rubble to fall.
Spyder - Laser Ground
Laser Cannon
Anti-ground pattern
Anti-ground pattern- Fires a blast that goes through the lower and middle layers, even a part of the upper layer. Avoiding this attack requires hovering with the Flashfield or otherwise being airborne, as the laser covers all ground that can be stood on.
Spyder Roof Crawl
Roof Crawl
Spyder Unit jumps and grabs the roof to dash towards Gunvolt. It will drop 3 bombs onto the field as it returns to its original position.
Spyder - Carpet Bombing
Carpet Bombing
Only used when on the ceiling. Drops bombs whose explosions can reach the lower parts of the field. Stay on the middle or upper layers to avoid it. They can't be blocked by the Flashfield.

Eidolon Flower[]

Eidolon

The Eidolon Flower (ViVid) was a gigantic biomechanical flower that grew inside the Pharma Lab. Its main purpose was the production of S.E.E.D. a drug normally used for stress relief, however, according to Moniqa, it is highly addictive, and is capable of enhancing their septimal powers (and in the process used to control adepts). Despite its seemingly docile nature, it is capable of protecting itself when a threat is identified. The plant's weak point is the pistil hidden within the flower, which can be opened by shooting it.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Eidolon Pollen
Pollen Spores
While the petals are closed, the Eidolon Flower will drop five yellow spores which sway to and fro as they fall. They cannot be blocked by Flashfield.
Eidolon Insects
Insect Swarm
When the petals open, the flower releases a swarm of bugs that home in on your position. They can be destroyed with Flashfield.

Mantis Legion[]

Mantis Legion illustration

The Michi Mark 17 Type-S "Mantis Legion" (ミチ一七式S“マンティスレギオン”) is a stronger variant of the Type-C Mantis, but with improved attacks and much shorter cooldown time for its core.

The higher-ups, fed up with the constant delays in 10th gen tank development, had some of the in-development Plasma Legion's tech re-purposed using the Mantis as a basis, and ordered S-FIT to develop a machine that "made it on time." The end result is the Mantis Legion. While it's not the machine the developers really wished for, due to it clearing the initial Plasma Legion's specs and being efficient in operation and repair due to its similarities to the Mantis, it proved to be very popular within Sumeragi. Some of the transferred Eunos staff worked on the project as well. This is the first time an Alphabet letter has been used in an officially adopted machine's model number.[1]

One Mantis Legion serves as the boss of Urban Run, while three units appear in Eridu. The 2nd and 3rd Eridu units are encountered in areas with spikes, hindering Gunvolt's ability to safely avoid attacks.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Legion EnergyHomingMissiles
Energy Homing Missiles
The Mantis Legion's missiles have been modified to fire energy balls when destroyed by Flashfield. These balls can't be blocked by the Flashfield.
Legion Jump
Jump
The Mantis Legion makes a jump to the other side of the screen, trying to crush Gunvolt.
Legion Vulcans
Legion LaserCannon
Vulcans + Laser Cannon
Sweeps the ground with bullets to force you into the air, making you easy prey for a following laser blast. To avoid, jump to position yourself inbetween where the bullets are fired onto.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2[]

Gunvolt, Copen, Tenjian, and Ghauri appear as medium bosses, depending on the campaign. Details on them can be found on their respective pages.

Proto Legion JB[]

Proto Legion JB sprite

The Proto Legion JB (プロトレギオンJB) was a prototype of the 10th generation autonomous tank Plasma Legion being developed by Sumeragi. Zonda acquired its design data during her infiltration of the group, which Teseo used as a basis to recreate the tank with his Septima. Since it was built in a rush, it lacks many of the finished version's features, such as the detachable body, Legion Tornado, ZMC Field, and Stabilizer missiles.[3]

It is deployed by Teseo to block Gunvolt's path when he nears a control room in the Seraph Interior, but is either destroyed or recalled by Teseo as it suffers critical damage.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Proto plasma
Hummer D
ハマーD
In place of the Stabilizer drill missiles, it is equipped with the AAC warhead "Hummer D". These missiles are unleashed in a swarm when the missile pods open, but can be blocked with the Flashfield.
Plasma Ball
Plasma Ball
A large plasma ball is charged up and fired from its head in the player's direction. If it connects with the ground, it will stay there for a moment before splitting into two balls that travel along the ground. This attack is always used in a three round burst.
Proto Legion JB - Teleport Drop
Teleport
When it loses 1/3th of its health, Teseo's Septima will cause it to teleport midair to the other side of the room and drop to the ground.

Fazent[]

Fazent illustration

The Fazent (フェイザント, Pheasant) was a prototype drone that was being developed by Sumeragi aboard their massive airship, the Seraph. Its body is split into an upper and lower half, each containing its own weaponry. It has yet to enter service due to engine problems.

When Eden hijacked the Seraph, Asroc used his machine enhancing and controlling septima Puppetwire to animate a Fazent, sending it to the city below to try and kill Copen, who was pursuing the airship. After being hounded by the drone for some time, Copen encounters and destroys the Fazent.

There were several prototypes aboard the Seraph, which Asroc animated and had distributed throughout Eden to be used by other members.[4] One ended up in Milas' unit, who brought it with them on their mission to sabotage the city's sewage system. It was seemingly placed on guard at a drainage canal. Gunvolt would eventually encounter this Fazent and destroy it.

Boss Battle:
The lower half has 150 kudos worth of HP and counts as a separate enemy.

Attacks Description
Fazent - Machine Gun
Machine Gun
A targeting reticule flies around before stopping on a certain spot, which gets peppered with gunfire.
Fazent - Missile Storm
Missiles
The Fazent flies off-screen and makes it rain missiles. Keep the Flashfield up to block them.
Fazent - Mantle Blazer
Mantle Breaker

マントルブレイカー[5]

The Fazent's lower half drops a mine that explodes a few seconds later, sending explosions across the ground. The Fazent will not use this attack if its lower half is destroyed.

"Prismatic Spyder"[]

Prismatic Spyder

The "Prismatic Spyder" was a Sumeragi Spyder tank trapped by Ghauri's "Prism" Septima. It is the mid-boss of Prism Highway. Like the Spyder unit from the first game, the core unit is protected by a thick shell, which only opens up when it attacks.

The exact context behind its appearance is unknown. While Copen dismisses it as yet another Sumeragi weapon fallen into Adept hands, the fact that it's firmly stuck to the ground by crystals may indicate that it was sent to stop Ghauri and was crippled by him.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
PrismSpyder LaserReflect
Laser - Refraction Pattern
The Spyder unit fires a laser in an upwards sweeping pattern. This laser can be refracted by the prisms scattered about the field, so be careful.
PrismSpyder LaserCollapse1
PrismSpyder LaserCollapse2
Laser - Collapse Pattern
Fires a laser across the ground, then up to the ceiling. The blast on the ceiling causes rubble to crash down. Dodge the initial laser by hiding behind one of the crystal rocks, and dodge the rubble with the Flashfield.
PrismSpyder Bombs
Bombs
Tosses a set of arcing bombs that make tall explosions. They cannot be blocked with Flashfield.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3[]

Recreation Room[]

The Recreation Room (レクリエションルーム) is the medium boss of Cyber Daydream (Cyber-Kowloon).

Hornet[]

Hornet art

Hornet (ホーネット) is the medium boss of Pendulum Heart (Stormy Megafloat).

The name being related to Mantis and Spyder is intentional.

Aspis[]

Aspis art

Aspis (アスピス) is the medium boss of Sandstorm (Desert Base).

Its name and appearance are a homage to the Giga Aspis in Mega Man ZX, particularly the Desert Aspis variant appearing in ZX Advent.

Luminous Avenger iX[]

Blade appears as a medium boss in the introductory stage. Information on her can be found on her page.

Mantis Zombie[]

Mantis Fusion encounter

The Mantis Zombie (マンティスゾンビ) is a cluster of old parts from the Mantis Legion and other machines controlled by a Sumeragi Institute Adept who wields the Septima Fusion (憑依 (フュージョン).[6]

He appears in City Slums, dropping down behind Copen as the latter passes by the remains of a Mantis Legion. The Adept uses his Septima to draw in the parts and assemble it into a broken down facsimile of the tank, turns himself into a ball of light, and merges with the wrecked machine to bring it to life.

The Mantis Zombie is mostly immobile and lacks some of the machine's armaments, such as missiles or the face laser cannon, presumably due to missing parts.

Each time the machine is disabled and its operator is forced out counts as an individual kill, so for high score chasing it is ideal to remain airborne throughout the entire fight.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Mantis Zombie - Scrap Launcher
Scrap Launcher
Launches pieces of scrap around the area through its left damaged missile pod. Used when Copen hovers behind its head. The Flashfield blocks it.
Mantis Zombie - Scrap Cannon
Scrap Cannon
Launches pieces of scrap from its right damaged missile pod towards the enemy. Like the above, it can be blocked with the Flashfield.
Mantis Zombie - Laser
Laser Shot
Aims its one intact gun horizontally or diagonally and fires a laser shot from within. Strangely enough, its direction is not dependent on where Copen is (i.e. staying on ground while the Mantis Zombie aims upwards).
Mantis Zombie - Fusion
Fusion
If the Adept is allowed to recover from his fatigued state after being forced out of the machine, he will fuse with it again by moving in a wide U-turn to the right of the screen.
Mantis Zombie - Engage
Engage
Once the Mantis Zombie has been disabled for a third time, the Adept will be too exhausted to fuse with it again. Out of other options, he will pull out a submachine gun blaster and begin horizontally firing in six shot bursts.

Garand[]

Garand illustration

Model Number BSM-02 Garand (型式番号BSM-02 ガランド)[7] is a black state-of-the-art autonomous fighter jet developed by the corporation Sol Electronics and used by the Sumeragi Institute of Human Evolution. It is designed to hunt down Minos and operate in places with complicated terrain such as cities, so it is far more mobile and flexible than past fighter jets.

It is equipped with a high-output energy cannon called the Accel Blast underneath its body, rocket pods on its wings, and claws near the nose capable of firing energy shots. The Accel Blast in particular is capable of instantly reducing Mino homes to scorched earth.[6]

In spite of its mobility, it is heavily armored and resistant to many weapons. Only Photon Detonator can make short work of it.

One unit was sent to the train en-route to Sumeragi Building 13 in order to prevent Copen from getting inside, but is destroyed by him.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Garand - Plasma Shot
Plasma Shot
Retracts its laser cannon and fires off balls of plasma from its claws in a spread.
Garand - Rockets
Missiles
Fires off rockets in the direction of Copen's position. Can be blocked with the Flashfield.
Garand - Accel Blast
Accel Blast
アクセルブラスト
Charges up a large cannon in order to fire a large laser shot on an enemy. Can only be avoided by flying above it.

Ladybug[]

Ladybug illustration

The CB04 Ladybug (レディーバグ)[8] is an autonomous security robot that was based on a lady beetle. It flies around while dropping bombs at their targets, and while enclosed, becomes invulnerable until it opens up again. Orbital Edge is the weapon that deals the most damage to it.

It is deployed inside Data Center Beta to stop Copen from advancing through.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Ladybug - Blaze Bomb
Blaze Bomb
Drops bombs from its underside, which upon contact with the floor explode into fire blasts going in various directions. If Rising Cyclone is used on the Ladybug as it drops the bombs, they will fly back upward and damage the Ladybug on impact.
Ladybug - Spinning Dark
Spinning Dark
Encloses itself and attempts to ram at their targets while spinning, either bouncing around walls or once after which they open up again. They are invulnerable while enclosed.

Luminous Avenger iX 2[]

Wood Golem[]

Wood Golem concept

The Wood Golem (ウッドゴーレム) is a mech created by the environmental maintenance system of the Jungle Block and is used for civil engineering work. The armor is made from trees that have been thinned and specially coated to make it eco-friendly. Because of its high combat power, it has been deployed in other blocks for security purposes[9]. It is also encountered in Passage to Top Floor.

It is weak to Doomsday Charge, and a fully charged attack with it will instantly destroy the branches covering its core.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Wood Golem Thorn Vine
Thorn Vine
Can be stopped with Doomsday Charge.
Wood Golem Bombs
Bombs
Wood Golem Rocket Punch 1
Wood Golem Rocket Punch 2
Punch and Tackle
Wood Golem Cyclone
Cyclone

Buster Room[]

Cannon Cage

The Buster Room (バスタールーム) is a defense system found inside the Laboratory Block. It is made up of six units, with the leading unit having a sensor eye that relays what actions to take in a given situation. Since the Grave Pillar was inactive due to the decline of intruders, its mechanisms became more complicated, leaving it ambiguous whether it attacks based on analysis. [10]

In battle, it switches to 3 weapon systems and each individually destroyed weapons are instantly repaired after shuffling. Its weakpoint is the weapon's sensor eye and destroying enough of them will cause the unit to malfunction and cease its operation.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Cannon Cage Electricity
Electricity
Up to five units discharge electricity forward, which forms a large column in the middle of the room. Can be lessened by destroying them before they fire.
Cannon Cage Shots
Energy Shots
Three units each fire a clusters of green energy shots forward.
Cannon Cage Balls
Artillery
Four of the six units take turn to fire bombs at the player. They can be Recoil Dashed into to hit back at the lower segments, which can deal damage to them.

Ice Insode[]

Ice Elephant

The Ice Insode (アイスインゾード) is a gigantic mass-production mech based on a mammoth. It was originally a security unit, but can be outfitted for battle by using scrap parts as ammunition.[10] They are first seen being manufactured inside the Industrial Block supervised by Brigade. Copen stumbles into an active one during his trek throughout the Artic Block.

It is weak to Doomsday Charge, which will also instantly destroy its ice shield.

Attacks:

Attacks Description
Ice Elephant Ice
Ice Wall
Conjures a spiked wall of ice on its trunk. The wall is durable and can take a lot of punishment before it can be broken. A fully charged Doomsday Charge will instantly destroy it.
Ice Elephant Scrap
Scrap Shot
Launches a pile of scrap at Copen. These can be pushed back with a Recoil Dash to deal significant damage to the Ice Wall, or deal decent damage to the Ice Mammoth itself without it.
Ice Elephant Scrap Rain
Scrap Rain
Fires a volley of scrap from its top launcher and will rain down in 3 directions. Like before, it can be pushed with a Recoil Dash.
Ice Elephant Slide
Slide
Shortly after performing Scrap Rain, it will attempt to ram Copen with an Ice Wall active.

Cut Medium Bosses[]

Mantis Delta[]

Mantis Delta illustration

A golden variant of the Mantis, known as the Mantis Delta (マンティス・デルタ), was once intended to appear in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, but didn't make the final cut. Its concept art was included on the obi strip (piece of paper wrapped around the spine of Japanese CDs) in the Armed Blue Gunvolt: Sou Soundtrack. The note with its art referred to it as an upgraded version of the Mantis Legion. As the art of it had Gunvolt's GV1 sprite as a comparison, it's likely the Mantis Delta was cut very early in development.

The Mantis Delta is referenced in a base conversation in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 when a model of it is brought out, and the tank is described as having never entered production. Supposedly, its gold paintjob was to be a kind of beam-resistant coating. These traits, as well as its name, may be a reference to the MSN-001 Delta Gundam in Gundam Unicorn MSV, which has golden armor stemming from a beam-resistant coating, and had the same fate of never entering production.

Plasma Legion derivative[]

Gv3 plasma legion new screenshot

A variation of the Plasma Legion that appeared in the Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 announcement trailer and first development update, appearing to be fought in Holy Night XIII (Downtown Christmas). In early demos it was absent, with the area it would be fought in being conspicuously empty. Later demos showed its area had been replaced with rubble and normal enemies, and ultimately it was omitted from the game. No concept art of it can be found in the GV3 Limited Edition artbook. In the game, there is a common enemy (the blue floating drone) with an attack extremely similar to the one seen in the trailer, but much smaller and slower.

Trivia[]

  • In the original specifications, the Mantis Legion's energy shots released from the missiles were going to home in on the player.[11]
  • The Fazent has a different, drab color scheme prior to being hijacked by Asroc. Upon being destroyed, its wreckage reverts to the original colors.
  • A Mantis figure can be seen on Merak's desk in artwork from Lazy Kingdom.
  • The Fusion Adept that controls the Mantis Zombie is the first and so far only pure medium boss Adept in the series. Others such as Tenjian, Ghauri, Gunvolt, and Blade exist, but those are previews for full boss fights.
  • The concept art for the Garand shows off 3 weapons (2 fired from the head) that were scrapped in favor of simply launching missiles at Copen.
    • Launching Hi-Explosive bombs on an arc.
      Mantis Zombie - Surrender
    • Launching cluster bombs that can be blocked with a Flashfield.
    • Launching combat drones that assists the parent Garand by firing lasers at their targets.
  • The Garand's design is an homage to MA-07 Garuda from Blaster Master Zero 2, and its laser, the Accel Blast, is a reference to a subweapon of the same name in the Blaster Master Zero series. Finally, the Garand's developer, Sol Electronics, is a reference to Sunsoft, the owner of the Blaster Master IP.
  • When the Mantis Zombie is defeated, a white flag may pop out of where the tank's core once was.
