“You’ll pay for that, buddy-boy... and it’s going to hurt!”
Gibril, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2

Gibril "The Full Metal Jacket" is a member of the Adept supremacist union Eden's "The Seven" possessing the rank of Bishop, and one of the antagonists of Azure Striker Gunvolt 2. She is the boss of the mission Luminescence (Mysterious Manor) in Gunvolt's story route, and Forfeit (The Sewers) in Copen's route. She also appears in the drama CDs Armed Blue Gunvolt and Eden's Party.

A cruel, violent and sadomasochistic person, Gibril takes intense delight in both giving out and receiving pain. She is an Adept with the Septima Metallon, which grants her power over metal.

Gibril is an Adept whose “Metallon” Septima gives her the ability to control metal. She has a cruel, yet sadistic personality, but more than either of those her true nature is quite masochistic.
She harbors great insecurities about her height, and she tends to express those insecurities by acting out in fits of pure rage. So, within the ranks of Eden, it is quite taboo to say words like “small” or “tiny” when she is around.
During battle, she can create metal-based weapons while in her “Alchemist Mode”, utilize her high-speed “Beast Mode” form, and her most powerful form, “Crisis Beast Mode”.[3]

Appearance

Gibril is a young teenage girl with short brownish red hair with two mirroring white streaks and amber eyes. She wears a black jacket with a fur collar, a white and purple t-shirt underneath that reads "satsu" (殺), meaning "kill", a short red skirt, and black knee high boots. She also wears a black spiked choker around her neck. Her small stature means she is often mistaken to be much younger than she actually is.

In her Armed Phenomenon, Gibril gains red hair and black eyes with red irises. She wears a black and grey bodysuit with red highlights, with large wing like pieces of armor attached to her shoulder covering her arms. She also wears an armored hood over her head. In her "Beast Mode" she purges her armor parts for a more agile form with claws. In her "Crisis Beast Mode", her appearance is mostly the same, though she is now enveloped in a light crimson aura, shaped like a wolf's tail.

Personality

Out of all The Seven, Gibril is without a doubt the most violent and unhinged. An openly cruel and destructive person, Gibril, in her own words, knows nothing but war. As such, she lusts for battle and chaos, showing great enthusiasm for anything that involves fighting and death.

Gibril is also rather sadistic, making sure to cause her opponents as much pain as possible. The normal humans she oversaw the kidnapping of were placed within high tech iron maidens which steadily drain their life energy to enhance her own septimal powers, eventually killing them and giving her husks to manipulate.

Gibril also harbors a deep rooted complex regarding her small height. When anyone mentions something to do with her being "small" or a "kid", she immediately loses her temper, flying into a rage rivaling the likes of Viper.

However, underneath her sadistic and dark personality, lies an incredibly masochistic side. After being killed by Gunvolt and resurrected, she falls completely in love with him due to the pain he caused her, and even claims that he feels something for her as well. When she faces him a second time, she begs him to attack her and cause her pain, all the while attacking him herself.

Gibril is also noticeably tomboyish. In her Japanese speech dialogue, she makes frequent use of the very masculine pronoun "ore" to refer to herself, though this distinction is lost in translated text, barring her rough mannerisms still serving as an indicator. When confessing her new feelings to Gunvolt, she briefly uses the feminine pronoun "atashi".

History

Background

Born in England to a weak-willed yet kind mother and a stern, serious father, Gibril received very polarizing types of affection growing up. Her mother loved her dearly, calling her "Little Angel", but her father, who thought highly of reputation, left Gibril's care almost entirely to her mother. Stressed by having an Adept daughter, the man began giving violent "coaching" to his wife, so she would raise her better.

Then, around the time Gibril graduated from preparatory school, her father struck her mother too hard, killing her. In a moment of fear and anger, Gibril used the blood flowing from her mother's corpse to forge a metallic blade and kill her father.

Afterwards, she was taken to a reception center for counselling, but eventually fled using her Septima. With nowhere else to go, she joined a gang of delinquent Adepts, committing all sorts of dark crimes, earning the nickname "Blood & Steel Gibril", after her Septima.

Some time after, she encountered Zonda, who was scouring the Earth looking for Adepts to join Eden, and challenged her to a fight. After being beaten, she decided to pledge herself to Zonda's cause.  It was noted by several observers of the fight that as Gibril was defeated, she began to laugh for an unknown reason.[1]

Eden's Party

After Tenjian rescues Olga, who he and Zonda believe has a Septima that can enhance other Septimas, Zonda has Gibril, Asroc, and Desna gathered. As the trio wait, Gibril assumes it will be a mission that involves killing lots of non-Adepts, but Zonda informs her their goal is to mend Olga's heart rather than get revenge on her behalf. Gibril questions why call her for it instead of more suitable members like Ghauri, Teseo, or Milas, and Tenjian says they're out of the country on missions, although Teseo did help plan the strategy. At Zonda's insistence, and Asroc's fortune cookie saying she is the key, Gibril relents and agrees to help.

Gibril Lumen Costume

After Desna and Asroc's attempts go poorly and force Zonda to knock them out before they mess things up any further, Gibril's turn comes. This part of the plan, which was also Teseo's idea, calls for Gibril to cosplay as Lumen using an outfit he had acquired. Gibril is extremely reluctant to do it, but Zonda convinces her to. While Gibril is embarrassed to wear it, the others compliment how she looks in the outfit.

As she introduces herself to Olga with the line "Sparkle☆! Into your hearts goes the...IRON MAIDEN! The Fresh Blood Pool Idol, Gibril-chan has appeared!!", the others who are remotely watching start having second thoughts, but Zonda remains confident it will work out. Olga recognizes Gibril's outfit and asks if she's "the singing lady", but the encounter turns sour when Olga says she can't be that person because she's too short, enraging Gibril and forcing Zonda to knock her out.

After Gibril wakes up and what to do about Olga next is discussed, Gibril mentions Olga's initial reaction to the outfit, which leads to Zonda figuring out that Lumen is really the one with the power they seek.

Armed Blue Gunvolt

Some time prior to the events of the first game, Eden launched a terrorist attack on the nation to bring down the barrier that protects it. Gibril and Teseo launched a two-pronged assault on the UTU Media Tower. Gibril would attack the tower itself while Teseo would hack the tower's main computer. In truth, this was a cover so that their spy could infiltrate Japan. Gibril arrived at the tower only to be confronted by Jota.

Jota at first mistakes Gibril for a child and offers to spare her if she surrenders, expressing disgust at Eden for using child soldiers. Angered, Gibril unveils her Septima and engages the Prideful Silhouette in a grueling battle. Before a victor could be decided, a satellite strike from Nova causes the fight to end in a draw and Gibril retreats on Tenjian's order.

Gunvolt route

Luminescence (Mysterious Manor)
Mysterious Manor concept art

Some time after Eden managed to steal the power of The Muse from Joule, Gibril and a gang of Eden soldiers commandeered an old mansion in the city to serve as a base of operations. From there they began kidnapping people off the street and used special technology stolen from the Sumeragi Group to drain the victims of their life energy and empower Gibril, reducing the victims to soulless husks which she could freely manipulate with her Septima. One of her victims happened to be Quinn's friend, prompting Gunvolt to investigate. Going by the number of stage enemies, there are at least 26 victims.

Gunvolt fights his way through the mansion and reaches Gibril's lab. Gunvolt at first believes her to be a child who was kidnapped by Eden, but Gibril reveals that she's one of the Seven and the one behind the kidnappings, using their blood to power her Septima. Disgusted, Gunvolt engages Gibril in an arduous battle. After taking too much damage, Gibril becomes suicidal and initiates her armed form's "Crisis Beast Mode", which drains her life energy and takes her powers to the extreme, but can't be deactivated... Whether she dies from exhaustion or Gunvolt finishes her himself, her reign of terror ends and GV claims her Mirror Shard.

Savior (The Garden 3)

As Gunvolt fights his way to the heart of the Garden to recover the rest of the mirror shards, Zonda summons mirror copies of the Seven to stop him, Gibril being among them.

Gibril professes her feelings for Gunvolt due to him killing her. But as she acknowledges that she knows only war, she feels the only way to show her love for him is through battle and thus engages the Azure Striker in battle once more. Gunvolt defeats the mirror copy and moves on.

Copen route

Forfeit (The Sewers)

After defeating four of the Seven, Copen receives an urgent message from Nori, telling him that his sister Mytyl had been abducted yet again. Copen follows Mytyl's transmitter to the sewers, where he finds Gibril and fellow bishop Teseo waiting for him.

Teseo taunts him by saying he's in love with his sister and intentionally reveals that he used his "Hack the Planet" Septima to transport Mytyl to the Garden, prompting Gibril to angrily demand that he leave and let her handle Copen like they discussed.

Teseo calls her a Tsundere and leaves, much to Gibril's annoyance. Gibril engages Copen in battle, who proceeds to mock and belittle her age and height, much to her growing anger. Eventually Copen manages to defeat her and claim her mirror shard, and develops the EX Weapon Ferrous Fangs based on her Septima.

Savior (The Garden 3)

During her final battle with Copen, Zonda uses her Eden's Presence Special Skill to summon illusions of the Seven to aid her, Gibril being one of them.

Other Appearances

Mighty Gunvolt Burst

Gerbil sticker

Gibril makes a cameo as collectible pixel sticker #48 in Mighty Gunvolt Burst. Some of Dynatron's attacks resemble ones used by Gibril, and the Power Plant stage features Gibril's Blood Servants as enemies. Coinciding with this, Gibril's pixel sticker is a stage completion reward.

Powers and Abilities

As a human attuned to the Septimal stage of the Lifewave and a member of The Seven, Gibril is a very powerful Adept who wields the Metallon (メタリカ, Metallica) Septima, which, true to its name, grants her the power to control all kinds of metal, and produce a red metallic fluid which may be solidified into various forms with typical metal color.

As shown in the Drama CD in her fight with Jota, her powers are great enough to control gravel with metals inside to use as a flying platform, and the remains of ships and planes which she pulls up from a ship graveyard off the coast. She can also manipulate her own body to enhance her physical abilities by controlling the iron within blood, but controlling the bodies of other people is a much harder feat and generally not practical for her to attempt[5] (although she did briefly stun Jota with the technique). As a testament to Gibril's power, with nothing but her natural abilities she was able to compete with Jota in his significantly enhanced transformed state, although she was steadily losing the battle.

While controlling living people via iron is difficult, controlling inanimate bodies is quite doable. By modifying husks of people whose life energy was drained by Sumeragi technology to enhance her powers, she was able to field a large number of zombies to guard the manor used as her base of activities. These husks are named Blood Servants (血の使い魔ブラッドサーヴァン)[6], or Masked Zombies.[7]

In battle, Gibril's Grimoire-based Armed Phenomenon gives her three modes to fight with, using tech copied from Sumeragi as a basis. In her A (Alchemist) Mode (A(アルケミスト)モード), she has the ability to fly and primarily fights at a distance by constructing metal objects out of blood such as axes, iron maidens, and spikes. In her B (Beast) Mode (B(ビースト)モード), her power is focused on enhancing her body for close quarters combat, shredding opponents with her claws while performing high speed maneuvers.

When Gibril has nothing to lose, she can access her most powerful form: her C (Crisis Beast) Mode (C (クライシスビースト)モード) which is physically the same as her regular Beast Mode, but with a crimson aura shaped like a wolf's tail. This mode rapidly burns up her life force, and enables her ultimate skill Iron Maiden, which combines physical enhancement and construct materializing and takes both to the extreme.

However, using this mode is suicide. Once Crisis Beast Mode is activated, it can't be turned off. Gibril will die from exhaustion regardless of how the fight proceeds.[8]

In her fight with Jota, Gibril initially used an assault rifle and jet to fight before they were broken and she revealed her Septima.

Boss Battle Skills

Gibril is unique in that her attacks completely change with each phase of the fight, as opposed to just adding more attack options to a consistent base. This is because Gibril loses her sanity more and more in the midst of battle and becomes more animalistic with each phase. The separate modes are as follows:

  • Alchemist Mode
  • Beast Mode
  • Crisis Beast Mode

Alchemist Mode

Skill Description
Gibril - Mother Of Mercy
Mother of Mercy
マザーオブマーシー[9]
Gibril makes an Iron Maiden pop up above the player's position and lets it drop straight down. If the player gets caught, they'll be unable to move for an amount of time.
  • The Iron Maiden ignores Prevasion, Overheats Gunvolt, and empties Copen's Bullits.
Gibril - Rain Maker
Rain Maker
レインメーカー[9]
Gibril flies across the top of the screen, creating blood globs behind her. The globs quickly morph into axes that fly toward you.
  • The Flashfield can't block the axes, but it can dispel the globs before they become axes much like the various traps featured prior in the level.
Gibril - Blood Brothers
Blood Brothers
ブラッドブラザーズ[9]
A ring of small blood globs is summoned around Gibril, and is then launched in a spread across the screen. The liquid adheres to the ground and becomes traps. The blood can be easily blocked by Flashfield, whether it's in the air or on the ground.

Beast Mode

  • In this mode, Gibril spends a good deal of time low to the ground, making it difficult to hit her with standard rounds. Either wait for an opening, or use Technos to send tags diagonally downwards and along the floor.
Skill Description
Gibril - Flesh Of The Blade
Flash Of The Blade
フラッシュオブザブレード[9]
Gibril charges toward the player with aggressive claw slashes. The attack has two variations; Three slashes, or two slashes transitioning into Strange World.
Gibril - Strange World 1
Strange World
ストレンジワールド[9]
A feint attack that appears to be a charge towards you. She sends an afterimage charging at you while the real one appears from above.
  • Gibril takes about a second longer to attack whenever she preps this attack.
Gibril - Dance Of Death
Dance of Death
ダンスオブデス[9]
Gibril dashes and jumps around the room wildly and unpredictably.
Gibril - Childhood End
Childhood's End
チャイルドフッズエンド[9]
An attack where Gibril launches a gigantic shockwave by cutting upwards, which travels the length of the screen. It grows as it travels, making it unavoidable after a certain point. It's avoidable by going behind Gibril before the attack is launched.

Crisis Beast Mode

  • In this mode, Gibril only uses her Special Skill. During this phase she has high resistance to damage, and contact with her will instantly trigger Overheat. Contact with Gibril does not, however, empty Copen's Bullits.
Skill Description
Gibril - Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden
アイアンメイデン
Gibril’s Special Skill. She forms a gigantic cage and flies around within, leaving blood pools on the floor, walls, and ceiling as she jumps off of them. Upon stopping in the center of the ceiling, these blood pools will generate enormous metal blades, draining her health in the process. There are four normal attack patterns which are randomly selected, and a special fifth one that is always selected when Gibril's health is nearly depleted.
  • Gibril will kill herself using this skill. When her health drops to 1 via this skill, she will fall from the ceiling and stand there, barely moving. Approximately 3-4 seconds later, she dies.
  • The Flashfield dispels the blood pools that spawn blades.

The kanji 殺 (satsu (murder) on the shirt that Gibril wears might look like a (poor fashion) sense from an adult’s perspective but she herself wears it thinking it’s cool, that’s the line I aimed for.

--Yoshitaka Hatakeyama

It was clear from the start that the little red riding hood would become a wolf and thus the process moved on straight ahead but our opinions on the structure of her parts differed so we did some fine-tuning and detailed exchanges. As a result… She’s the boss that took most time (to complete). The feet in her wolf mode use “that” musical’s animal puppets as reference. Because I felt that (in my design) they didn’t look like a wolf’s feet. Her pre-transformation (look) was always a brown-haired girl with streaked hair. Because I like brown-haired girls (laughs)

--Munehiro Araki

The theme's melody is intended to express Gibril's "hysterical and single-minded" traits.[10]

Trivia

  • As part of the Eden top members being based on classical fairy tales, Gibril's design motif is The Little Red Riding Hood.
  • As a callback to earlier story drafts, The Seven are all named after missiles.[11] Gibril is presumably named after the Israeli Gabriel missile--"Gibril" is the Egyptian Arabic variant of Gabriel.
  • Gibril was planned to be added as a dual boss with Carrera in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 but didn't make the cut. Her and his Image Pulse quotes are a reference to this.[12]
  • All of Gibril's attacks are named after songs of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, and in the Japanese version her Septima is named after Metallica.
  • In an interview where the difficulties of main series Gunvolt boss conception was discussed, it was mentioned that one boss even took half a year to finish designing.[13] Considering her designer comment about her taking the longest, this was most likely Gibril.
  • Gibril's T-shirt is literally named "T-Satsu", a pun between "shirt" and "satsu" (殺, or "kill"). There is a graffiti reference to this in Cyber Daydream (Cyber-Kowloon).
  • According to an official height chart, Gibril is 150cm (4'11") tall, although ironically, she is significantly taller than Joule, Mytyl, and Zonda.
  • Due to her personality and mannerisms, Teseo has dubbed her to be a "tsundere".
  • Gibril's title of "Full Metal Jacket" is a reference to a type of bullet.
  • Gibril's fight is one of the three boss fights in GV2 in which Gunvolt doesn't shout "Oversurge! Azure Striker! ____". The others are Copen and True Zonda.
  • Gibril is the only boss in GV2 who has walls at any point in the fight.
