After the horrific incident in which they lost their parents, Rei and Miu have been under the care of their aunt and uncle (who are not their real “aunt” and “uncle” per se, but rather distant relatives who opened up their home to the orphaned siblings.), and they have been very good to the siblings. However, their uncle works as a reporter, and is constantly traveling around the world. Their aunt is an interpreter whose services are very much in demand, which means that both of their caretakers are seldom at home, leaving the Rei and Miu on their own more often than not.

When they first began to care for Rei and Miu, their aunt and uncle debated on whether they should try to settle down a bit and keep their work close to home. Knowing how much they loved their careers, Rei and Miu insisted that they continue doing the work they loved and that just taking them in was more than they could ever ask for.

Since they were always out of the house, it was up to Rei and Miu to make sure all of the chores got taken care of, which proved to be a bit of a formidable task at first. But, after a lot of trial and error, they eventually became quite good at housework, much to the delight of their aunt and uncle.

Compared to other kids their own age, Rei and Miu’s housework prowess was something that any parent would brag about to their friends.

Rei sat slouched in his chair at the kitchen table chomping down a piece of toast.

“Rei, your posture is terrible. Sit properly when you’re eating, geez.”

“Mngh bah (my bad),” Rei replied to his sister with a mouthful of toast.

Rei washed his toast down with some iced tea.

“Yeah, I think this piece came out pretty good. It’s super yummy, as always!”

“It takes no real skill to make a piece of toast. Honestly, Rei…”

This was typical morning banter between the two of them. It does wonders to help block out the memories of that awful nightmare the two of them experienced.

— As much as they wish they could, they cannot go back in time. No matter much heartache they may feel, their mother and father are never coming home. Fortunately for them, both their aunt and uncle have been so warm and kind to them, just like their real parents. They’ve done a fine job raising Miu.

Rei would always say to himself that in order to protect the warm and loving family life they have, he mustn’t let the nightmares of the past haunt him in the present…
